Spell the Word, Races!

It has been a crazy, busy week. Our home school group had it's annual Spelling bee on Friday and the kids were also involved with a local church's pine derby racing event. Both events were fun, but took weeks of planning, practicing, building and preparation. 

This year for the spelling bee, Jeanna finished 2nd place in her group. She messed up on the word "sleep" as she started spelling, lost her train of thought and restarted it without asking to restart it. Once the speller says the word, spells the word and then says it again, it is considered final. She was pleased with her effort and we of course are proud of her as this is the child that had so many delays, but look at her now. 

Jackson once again finished 1st place in his group and has quite the following among the other parents and spellers. He was all business like up there and was extremely pleased when he was the last one standing. 

James was 1st out in his group this year, but he is a trooper and never looses his smile. 

The pine derby races were a huge hit! The kids enjoyed designing, painting and building their cars. There were families from 3 churches involved and the camaraderie was fantastic. The neatest thing to see was how wonderful the 4 pastors were together... they were like old friends and really demonstrated a wonderful friendship and brotherhood that I think really set the tone for a beautiful event. There were 4 categories of races; K-2nd grade, 3-5th grade, 6-12th grade and then adults (with preschoolers)
Jordan won 1st place in design, Jeanna won 2nd place in speed, Jackson won 3rd place in speed and James won 3rd place in design and 1st place in speed. 

Oh... and I have to mention that Jordan is taking driver's ed at one of the local high schools. Interesting! She cracks me up talking about how the kids behave in school. She is so shocked! She has almost finished her classroom hours and starts her driving hours next week. My baby will be 16 yrs old in April.  How in the world.....

Orientation & First Day

I am back up and running. Orientation cards will go out today in the "fake mail" :) We have Entertaining Angels tomorrow and then will have orientation on Thursday. My new laptop does not have some of the same programs that my old one did, so I will have to use something else for school i.d's and class schedules. I just this minute won a bid for 3rd grades curriculum! Yipee! The kids say they are excited and ready... in fact, last night Jackson and Jeanna got their school uniforms out and ready with socks and undies. LOL! 

First day of school for elementary minus pre-k is Monday, August 26th with High School and Pre-k starting after Labor Day.  

Curriculum Sold & Photography Elective

I was able to sell the curriculum that I used last year for 5th and 10th grade and the very nice surprise was that it sold for more than I paid for it! Can't beat that with a big stick.

I also found a really nice book called, The Kids' Guide to Digital Photography: How to Shoot, Save, Play With & Print Your Digital Photos on E-Bay for under $2 and it is in excellent, almost new condition. I think 6th grade will really enjoy using this book and the surprise "back-to-school" gift that I purchased. Every year I try to get a small gift for each student since I save money on the whole back to school clothes and supplies thing.

My grandma had to move in with us. The reason why I like her here is because we can always see her with out her having to come over. We can just go into her room and there she is. She is always there for me even when I do bad stuff. I really appreciate when she sticks up for me. Now that she is here I need to listen to my mom so that we don't get her upset. Because when my mom gets upset my grandma gets upset and every body gets stressed out. So that's what I can do to help with the stress in the house.

Story Starters

Question: If you were to give your mother a day with no housework, what things would you do to help out?

Answer by Jordan: If there was no work for one day I would help with the baby and help with my brothers with their home work and school work. If there were school that day I would go to school and get the work I had to get done that day. I would probably get my homework done and then play for the rest of the day. It would be fun and you should always do some work even if you don’t want to do it.

Question: Garber's kites were not only used for target practice; they were also used to carry important papers from ship to aircraft. In what other ways might a kite be used as a tool rather than a toy?

Answer by Jeffrey: Garber kites can also be a warning sign to airplanes. They can let pilots know they are in a restricted area. It can let people know that they are near a certain area. It could be used as an explosive device. You could probably use a kite for the armed forces. You could probably attach a camera to it. It could take pictures from the kite. They could camouflage it to blend in with its surroundings. So the Garber Kite could be used for the army. I think you could put some together to make a bigger kite to send letters to and from the planes in the sky. You could have kite shows. You could do all kinds of things with kites. Kites are the coolest things ever made.

I think girls should wear makeup. The reason is so they know they are pretty. I also think girls should not put so much of it on because it doesn't look that cool with goo gobs of it on your face. Girls only need makeup when they are going somewhere or somebody is coming over. It is fun putting makeup on, that is one reason why I like being a girl. My Birthday

April 1st was my birthday and it was so fun. The reason why it was fun was because I got the gifts I wanted. I also got to have the day off from school. I got to play my favorite game. I had chocolate cake and cotton candy ice cream. I am now eleven years old. I got a lot of cool stuff. I got a remote control car, a Hannah Montana marker set, brats doll hair shop set, MP 4 player and a gift card and one more gift coming. I had a fun birthday.

In My Opinion by Jordan

My favorite book series is The Diary Of The Wimpy Kid. I like this series because it is funny and it can keep me busy. I would recommend this book to people that like funny books. I got an Amazon Gift card for my birthday and my mom ordered the series for me. I really hope I can keep them in good shape. I really hope I like the books.

Happy Birthday Princess

Today is my daughter's birthday. She is 11 years old. I cannot believe that the little baby that they handed to me at the agency is the young lady that I look at today. She is very smart, funny, a voracious reader and very nurturing to the little people that come into our home through foster care. She started off calling herself, "Mommy #2" when the new baby came in January, but has since taken over and now calls me "the other mommy". LOL!

For her birthday, she slept in, has taken the day off from school, ate a cookie and grapes for breakfast and is currently playing a computer game. Such royalty!
